How Businesses Can Properly Dispose of Tires

Old tires can quickly become an environmental and legal liability if not handled properly. For businesses, it’s important to know that tires generated through commercial activity must be disposed of in compliance with local, state, and federal laws—and that illegal dumping is strictly prohibited.

Improper tire disposal can lead to:

Fortunately, there are legal and responsible ways for businesses to dispose of tires in the Stark-Tuscarawas-Wayne (STW) District.

Where Can Businesses Dispose of Tires?

Businesses can take tires directly to licensed disposal facilities. The STW District does not endorse any individual business, but we do maintain a list of disposal options that meet Ohio EPA requirements for proper tire handling.

Currently, these facilities are available for business/commercial tire disposal:

Location: Akron, Ohio

Accepts: Truck tires only

Note: This list is subject to change as facilities update their services or as new options become available. Businesses should always call ahead to confirm accepted materials, hours, and any applicable fees.

A Few Key Reminders:

• Do not dump tires illegally—this includes vacant lots, behind buildings, or on rural property. Ohio law strictly prohibits this.

• Do not mix tires with general waste that is sent to a landfill unless the landfill is specifically permitted to accept tires.

• Keep proper records of your tire disposal to demonstrate compliance with Ohio EPA regulations.

• If your business generates large volumes of tires (auto shops, trucking companies, fleet maintenance centers), consider establishing an ongoing contract with a licensed tire hauler or disposal facility.

Tires take up space, do not decompose easily, and pose unique environmental risks. By ensuring proper disposal, businesses help:
