Event Details

Hazardous Waste Collection is for residents of Stark, Tuscarawas, and Wayne Counties ONLY. ID is required for the appointment.
Pop up HHW event in Wayne County:
The dates will be May 3rd, 2021
The event will be 6 hours long (12-6pm)
These events will be by appointment only. Residents can go to this link to schedule them at their own convenience. We will be accepting 144 appointments over the 6 hours; an increase from the 72 we did in Wayne County last year.
The following wastes will be accepted at the event as long as they were generated in a household:
Automotive Fluids (Oil, antifreeze, fuel injector fluid, etc.)
Cleaning supplies and other household chemicals
Diesel, Kerosene, Gasoline (Limit 10 gallons per car. Containers will not be returned. All containers must be closed tightly.)
Fluorescent Bulbs
All tubes up to 8 ft- CFL- all sizes
Mercury-containing devices (ex. Thermometers)
Oil-Based Paint (NO LATEX PAINT), Stains, and Varnish: How to identify oil-based paint- Look on the back and find the cleanup section. Oil-Based Paint requires paint thinner or mineral spirits. If you have Latex Paint, it will say to use water and soap for the cleanup, will use phrases like “water-based” and usually is housed in a plastic container. Latex paint can be placed with household trash once it has been solidified (either by allowing it to dry out or by mixing in kitty litter, sawdust, or shredded newspaper).
Pesticides, Herbicides, Fungicides, Fertilizers

Why can’t there be a hazardous waste recycle program like Lorain County has?

    • Steve Tharp

The District funds one at the Canton Recycle Center and is open to all district residents of Stark, Tuscarawas, and Wayne Counties. Visit and go to the blog section labeled “What do I do with my hazardous waste…” and the links and appointment information is all there. The pop up events in Wayne and Tuscarawas Counties are to assist in diversion of additional materials and for the convenience of residents in those counties.

Thank you for directing me to the main website. Last I checked Habitat for Humanity is not accepting latex paint. Your website needs to update that info as well as other misinformation listed. I can’t believe that it is not illegal to pour flammable liquids down the drain at home as the website implies. That is so dangerous on many levels!

        • Steve Tharp

Where does it say that? Provide the link so that we can review this information.

        • Steve Tharp

Robert, I found the area you were speaking of… the website is factual on the Household Hazardous Waste. Household Hazardous Waste is not treated the same way as Hazardous Waste generated by business/commercial entities. Household Hazardous Waste is exempt from the RCRA which governs how we handle this. We certainly do not advocate putting anything down the drain which is why in that same section we promote our canton recycle center. We will work on rewording that section as we certainly don’t want that to happen. I appreciate you pointing this out. I will be calling Habitat Restore this morning to verify the information and report what they have told us.

Hello, we operate a used oil and other waste collection facility in Canton, Ohio. I live in Uhrichsville and would love to support these events in the future. My guess is you already have a vendor for this. Can you contact me for future events?

    • Steve Tharp

I would be happy to give you a call. Stay tuned!
